April 17, 2010, 1-3 PM – “Not Your Gym Teacher’s Hoedown!” If you have taken gym in school, you have probably danced the Virginia Reel to recorded music while you gym teacher called out the next do-si-do. In the days before disco, break dancing and MTV, there was the community dance, sometimes called a hoedown. Everybody, young and old, attended these dances. Come to the EMP to experience the vibrant community of callers, musicians and dancers who keep this tradition alive in Seattle. Hootin’ and hollerin’ allowed – no gym shorts required! State Young Adult Fiddle Champ Sarah Comer is an old time fiddler and fiddle teacher. Caller Amy Carroll is a music teacher and parent who recently launched a calling career. All dances called, no experience necessary! Dances appropriate for kids ages 10 & up – all welcome!
